April 2024 Total eclipse

Solar corona during totality.
Prominences visible during totality.
Eclipse in progress, with sun spot.

Below is a dataset from the total solar eclipse of April 8, 2024. The images were recorded from Texas, in the totality band, South of Dallas, on the shore of the Richland Chambers Reservoir, at a location of latitude 31.9404, longitude -966.1248. Totality lasted 3m13s on location, and the eclipse duration was 2h 40mn 03s. The eclipse maximum was at 1:42pm CT.

Weather was very cloudy at first, but about 30s of totality was visible free of cloud, and most of the post totality was clear.

I thought I was shooting RAW format as usual, however only jpeg were recorded 🙁

Camera setup on the shore of the Richland Chambers Reservoir at the end of the eclipse.

The imaging set up was:

  • Sony 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS Lens, at 400mm
  • Sony focal doubler
  • Sony A7R III
  • IOptron GEM mount
  • Generic lead battery, 12v.
  • DROK Waterproof DC Buck Converter Voltage Regulator 8-22V to 3-15V for the Camera power supply. A cheap and very underrated solution for DSLR/Mirrorless power supply in the field. Anderson poles connectors to supply the GEM with 12v and split to the converter. Simple, cheap, light, versatile, modular and power efficient.
  • Baader film solar filter, mounted on plywood rings (cut with a hand rooter).

With this very portable set up, I imaged at F800m. See detail of each image in the exif for exposure, ISO and aperture. Solar filter removed during Totality.
